NANCY E. (ABBOTT) JOHNS Obituary

Nancy E. Abbot Johns, 65, passed away peacefully at Quail Creek Nursing Home in Springfield, Missouri on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, after a two and a half year bout with cancer. She was born on October 24, 1947, in Kansas City, MO, to Orson Thomas and Lorene (Sederquist) Abbott. She was a 1966 graduate of North Kansas City High School. In July of 1968, she married Joseph Johns of Kansas City, MO, and they had two sons. For the next 44 plus years, she attempted to raise Joe and their sons as they moved from Kansas City to Springfield back to Kansas City then to Waterloo, Ill, then to Mexico City, then to Marissa, Ill, and finally to Stockton, MO, where she did volunteer work in each town. She did a superb job. None who met this beautiful, kind, and compassionate lady could fail to appreciate her bravery and sense of humor. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Joseph E. Johns of Stockton; her sons, Joseph Anderson Johns and William Joseph Johns of Springfield, MO; her sister, Shirley Abbott of San Juan Capistrano, CA; her Harley Davidson Motorcycle; and her dog, Keesha.

From Kathy Meyer Dunback on January 26th, 2016
I grew up with Carl and he was my first kiss. His death on graduation night is still a shocking memory that never fades. I think of him so often. We lost such a good person way too early.

From Jim Bird on September 25th, 2016
I thought after 50 years it would be easier to write about my happy graduation night experience with Carl, his Mom and Dad and my family.  But it isn't, this is my third attempt.
We lived in such a cool post WWII neighborhood as Hal and Kathy have indicated and Carl lived on the first street of an adjoining subdivision next to Oakwood Manor where we all went to middle school.  Carl always hung out with us though.  The guys played every sport the year round, whatever was in season.  As we got older the girls would come around sometimes to watch us play.  It was almost idyllic, so much fun and good things happening constantly.
If you recall on graduation night we received "fake" diplomas on the stage and afterward we got our real ones in classrooms with alphabetized signs. Since Carl and I were in the ABC room we hooked up as we left the auditorium.  Carl was going to Findlay College in Ohio to study mathematics; I said Jackie and I were going to SMS, she to major in mathematics too and I was going to get a BS in beer.  As we stood in line we kept cracking jokes and laughing like we always did.
My Mom, Dad and little sister were tagging along behind us when Mr/Mrs Calcara came up to my family.  Mrs. Calcara saw my Mom, held out her arms and said, "Our little boys have grown into big men!" and they embraced.  His Dad and mine were laughing about something too.  Carl said, "Now they're acting like little kids."
My little sister woke me up the next morning, and with wild eyes, told me what had happened.  Hal's Mother had called my Mom.  Two nights later it seemed like the entire village were paying their respects to the Calcara household with lines of people entering through the front door.  And I watched my Mom embrace Mrs. Calcara again.

Pam was a neighborhood friend I cherished from early grade school. We shared a love of horses and of art. She was making oil paintings even as a child and once surprised me with a portrait of our Cocker Spaniel. She starred in many theater productions at NCKHS and OPHS. I was most blown away by her role in THE LARK. Years later, I saw her at the funeral of a neighbor. She was still radiantly beautiful, although her battle with cancer had turned her hair snow white. We kept in touch after that, and I cherish several handmade greeting cards she sent me. I was so sorry to hear from her parents that she had passed. Every day, I see her drawings in my bookcase and the bring me me such sweet memories.

From Roberta (Ginny) Scanland-Pressly on June 26th, 2016
I only met Paul around 1994 through a love of riding Harleys and our membership in the Harley Owners Group. A love of boating also took us to Paul’s lake house a few times. Only a little over a year ago did I realize Paul and I were in the same high school class. Somehow, our high school experience never came up, (perhaps because our spouses didn’t share this with us).

Paul was a funny guy. Whether it was a simple dinner ride, a weekend (or longer) motorcycle rally, or a trip to the lake, Paul kept the party going. He kept everyone on their toes, laughing all the way. In 2003, he fought through serious brain surgery, recovering just in time for summer, (the best time of year for bikers and boaters), but was suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us even as spring was at its best.

Paul’s visitation and funeral were attended by an amazing number of people. Until seeing the long lines of people at the visitation and standing room only at the funeral, I don’t think anyone realized how many lives he had touched.

Pat was my neighbor from grade school through high school.  We rented a house together for just a few months before she became sick.  We had many good times with our families.  Fun sharing the same first name and rooming together.  I think of our good times often.

Karen Swentor, vicky and i ran around together and really could have got into a lot of trouble, but we managed to dodge the bullet a few times.
I always called anyone that lived in Gashland the gashland gandies!  I really remember us riding around in Karen's VW trying to figure out the words to "Louie Louie".  I believe that we made it across the inter-viaduct a couple of times.  Good Lord!  I remember being at her mom's house and she was having really bad pains in her right side.  Jerry Meyers picked her up and took her to the EM.  She was having an append. attack!  Karen married Ron Meyers & this is how she met her future husband Jerry!  Another good pal of mine!

Charles was my counsin  He was a Medic in the Vietnam war.  He lived off of Grand Ave.  close to The Hyatt Regency (now the Sheraton), right by Crown Center.  He had obtained a job at the Hyatt as the head bar tender.  He met with an untimely, tragic death close to his residence.  He was very kind and I loved to be around him.  His Grandpa and Grandma ran a gasoline/bar/restaurant located at 69th and North Oak; it was called Fred and Opals Tavern.  Aunt Opal was my Fathers Sister.  Charles' smile and laughter will be missed!
