After our wonderful graduation ceremony from North Kansas City High School, I moved to the Plaza area and attended the Kansas City Art Institute from1966-70, receiving a BFA in Graphic Design and Corporate Visual Identity. Upon graduation from KCAI, I was awarded a scholarship to attend the Walt Disney California Institute of the Arts, his namesake art institution encompassing all areas of fine and performing arts, 1970-1973. During my time in grad school, my desire was to be a graphic designer. I had a graphic design internship then, with Charles and Ray Eames Studio in Venice, California. The Eames line of furniture was produced by Herman Miller, where I went on to work as a graphic designer 1974-1979 , in Zeeland, Michigan. Then … a career shift, and from 1980-85, I designed for NASA (L B Johnson Space Center) emphasizing the Space Shuttle Orbiter and Solar Power Satellite programs. I got married during this time, and we have a daughter, Lauren. Divorced later, and I had another career shift, and became a professor at the University of Texas – Austin. Within five years, I was offered a professorship to head the digital design program at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, at the Johnny Carson Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. In 1997, Ben Galatzan and I met at the university, and we have been together since (married in 2014). In 2012, I was granted Professor Emeritus at UNL.
( My creative lenticular video print work may be viewed on Instagram under RonBearBartels ). I retired - somewhat early and unplanned - when Ben was unexpectedly offered a professorship to teach in nursing education at the University of Colorado, in nearby Colorado Springs. He is presently teaching, and also working on his PhD (2020). We have nine nieces and nephews, and grandson. We spend as much time with them as we can, about yearly we try to visit them in Charleston SC, Winston-Salem NC, Owego New York, and Princeville, Kauai. I really enjoyed so many moments growing up and maturing at NKCHS, Northgate Junior High, and Crestview Elementary. I am unable to make this very special reunion in 2016. But, I sincerely look forward to hearing from some of my old buddies and comrades from this magical time growing up! - RB
